For the past week, everywhere I have gone I have been singing this song at the top of my lungs! I just put it back in my CD player in my car after not listening to it for quite a while. I love it! I can easily say that I have listened to this song thousands, if not millions of times and I am sure at this point that I will never get sick of hearing it. It's a lot like spending time with an old friend, you know, someone you go way back with, but haven't seen for a really long time. So much reminiscing!
Jane's Addiction is hands down my favorite band of all time!
I have seen Jane's play live only 2 times. The first time almost makes me crazy whenever I think about it, because I had no idea who they were at the time and I was too busy flirting with boys at the concert to even care who was playing. It was 1991 in San Diego, I was 15, it was the last show from the very first Lollapalooza Tour. They played with Rollins Band, The Violent Femms, Souxsie and the Banshees, Ice T, In Living Colour, and Nine Inch Nails, just to name a few of the classic 90's rock bands that were there. My big brother, Jake took me with all his cool friends... (he was always so good to his little sis) A few years later I learned how much I loved their music and ever since I have wished I could go back in time and watch that show! That was a pretty awesome place in time, I just didn't realize it.
Then finally, 12 years later, after listening to their music daily, on many road trips, sitting around many campfires, and snowboarding many epic powder days, I finally had the opportunity to see them again. They headlined the 2003 Lollapalooza Tour at the USANA Amphitheatre in Salt Lake. I was 8 months pregnant with Zach at the time, but I wouldn't have missed it for anything and it couldn't have worked out more perfect. Greg and I were sitting in general admission on the grass, when a fierce lightning storm rolled right through the amphitheater. Everyone was told to hurry to their cars. We chose to run up front and claim our new spots while everyone else went to take refuge from the storm. At the time I thought maybe we were the stupid ones, but it worked out quite perfectly. Unbelievably, much of the crowd never returned and we ended up with near front row seats for Audioslave and my favorite, Jane's Addiction. With lightning striking in the distance, they rocked the house!!!
There is so much good music in the world. I love a lot of different types of music and many different artists and songs. But Jane's Addiction has been with me to more places and lightened my mood more times than any other music. There are so many good years and good friends that are connected to this music for me. You know who you are...
To me, good memories make good music even better.

Oh man, I just typed the hugest comment to this and then blogger wouldn't upload it. So here goes again:
Yes, I know who I am! We have shared some serious good times to the tune of Jane's. I mean GOOD times....They are also without a doubt my favorite band of all time. It has always amazed me that Mitch doesn't know their music. He never got into them. (???) I will throw in an album and be all jonesing over it and Mitch doesn't get it. :(
Soooo cool that you got to see them in '03, I never knew that. Remember when they had a documentary in Sundance? That screening was so epic. And then after we saw the movie, we were at work at BRC on main in Park City and I looked out the window-all high on Jane's Addiction- and scream "There's Perry Farrell!". The dude was just strolling up the street, like nobody's business. Kindof one of the crowning moment's of my existence, cheezy, I know.
Anyhoo, great post and even better musical taste! :)
I have always loved this song! I can't believe you were at a concert with Jane's addiction, violent fems, nine inch nails, etc. That's like the woodstock of our lifetime. So jealous!
Oh I remember Sundance, Unfortunately I wasn't there when you guys saw Perry Ferrell strolling Main Street. But I did get my moment a few years later at the Snowboard Industry convention in Vegas. Perry was DJ ing a party there and Casey and I stood right next to him outside the Hard Rock Hotel while waiting for a cab. We were both speachless and I am pretty sure it was one of the crowning moments of both of our lives!
I just have to add this for my own good memory... For anyone who is familiar with the album "Kettle Whistle" right now Zachs favorite song is "My cats name is Maceo" He calls it "Mr Beans song" and we listen to it over and over and he sings his little heart out. Sometimes I even hear him walking around the house just singing it to himself. I love it!!!
No Way! That is so cute! Another one of my fave Jane's songs is "Kettle Whistle" of off that album. I remember you telling me about that show where Perry was DJ'ing. So rad. Read the last comment on my blog from Joanna about "Jane Says". So timely.
I love reading your blog. I learn so many things I never knew about you. And I need to hear Zach sing "My cats name is Maceo" . Have him call me. You have such an amazing way with words. Maybe you should try writing a book. ( You have plenty of Real Life Material) Nice Post. Hugs & Kisses
okay 3 things.
jane says is probably my 2nd most listened to song of all time after southern cross. both are very you-ish.
i've never seen them live :(
you know you weren't only flirting with boys at lallapalooza. you were also rolling your eyes at the rock bands, wishing instead that it was a b.e.t. festival (he he he)
I am not sure what b.e.t. is, but I think you know me pretty well and most likely you are right on ;)
