It occurred to me that all of my favorite songs are those that bring back the strongest or best memories. I decided I need a little time to think and a lot more room than what is fair to post in her comments section. Here are a few of the songs that would definitely be on my life's soundtrack and the stories behind them...
Probably the first song on my list is "Jane Says" by Jane's Addiction. I've already bored you with that long story, but if you care to read it again you can click here for that post.
This song, actually this whole album reminds me so much of my Mother and it takes me back to my childhood. We listened to this album together a lot when I was a kid. If you think about it, music is a lot like a time machine, it can bring back so many little things from a certain place in time... this song is a direct flight to a specific moment early in my life. Me and my Mom are driving down Main Street from Farmington to Bountiful. Which means we were surely headed to Grandmas house that day.
Jim Morrison in general will always remind me of my big brother, Jake. He looked just like him for much of his youth, he listened to him everyday. So I have always had many deep memories with anything Jim Morrison/ The Doors and I love all of their albums. But I have one very vivid memory from this song, a memory that I LOVE and treasure. If you have ever been with me and this song came on, you have already heard this story, poor Greg has heard it a million times, but he always lets me tell him again :) Every time I hear "Riders on the Storm" I am taken back to a morning drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon with my dear (late) friend Doug. We are in his jeep and it is snowing SUPER hard, the windows are all fogged, we can barely see the road. Neither of us said a word, we were both so tuned into the music and it just fit the scene so perfectly. I can feel the bouncy seats and smell the exhaust from his CJ5 whenever I hear this song. I am sure if Doug were still alive he would have the same memory that goes along with this song. We were great friends. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song (and memory)
I have two very strong memories that go along with this song, both are with Greg, both just take me away into a calm and peaceful place. This is a long song so if you skip to about the 2 minute mark that is when things get a little less trippy and the music really starts to take you away. The first memory I have of this song was from when Greg and I were first dating. We were up Farmington Canyon at the 3rd Glacier Lake. Greg disappeared from camp and I found him sitting in my little white Toyota pickup with this song cranked. I decided to climb in and join him... I have loved it ever since. We watched the low clouds fly across the star filled sky, the brightest stars I have ever seen. That was one of the most beautiful nights I have ever experienced.
The other memory I have of this song is just from this last summer in Lake Powell. Everyone except Greg and I had left the houseboat for a few hours we had the whole cove to ourselves. So we turned on this song on the top deck stereo of the houseboat and cranked it up as loud as it would go so it filled the whole canyon with beats and rhythm. We each jumped in a kayak and just drifted around. Greg was in his kayak fishing, I was in mine, just riding the light breeze and enjoying a tasty beverage. The temperature of the air could not have been more perfect. I was listening to the sound of the water as my paddle dipped in and out. It was sunset in Lake Powell... can you feel it? ahhhhhh....
So, now I ask you this same question: "Now tell me...why do you listen to music? What does it do for you? And what songs would belong on your all time favorite list?"

Well spoken girlfriend!! Okay, my commentary:
Leader of the Band was almost on my list, so I'm feeling Fogelberg.
Doors: YES. So Jake. So Andy. So youth. A funny side note is that a couple weeks ago a ring tone went off and it was Riders On The Storm. My mom and I both grabbed for our phones at the same time and said, "That's Andy." Both of us had programmed that song to play when Andy called and neither of us knew the other had. It was random, trippy & funny. That story of you & Doug is really cool.
Tasty beverage? ;)
Oh, and I wanted to use Jane Says too, but couldn't find a good video of it. Same for a few Cure songs. I could do a whole post on KJQ in the 90's.
Dn Fogelberg is still a favorite of mine. It always gives me a warm feeling of contentment. It was played a lot in the time after the mudslide. Do you remember that Jake thought he was a reincarnation of Jim Morrison? I'll have to give some thought to my list. watch for a future post.
