I Think my 4 Year Old is Brilliant!

Or maybe I'm just excited because I have never had a 4 year old before and as with every new milestone in my children's lives I am overjoyed and always amazed at how smart their beautiful little minds are!

Today was certainly one of those proud moments.  Zach totally caught me by surprise with his drawing skills that I am almost embarrassed to say, I didn't know he had.  We have been working a lot on writing his name, and he has gotten better at it over the past few weeks.  He does a lot of coloring, and painting, but honestly, I have never seen him draw many shapes or write any other letters besides Z.A.C.H.  I sort of thought that this was an area that he may be a little behind in.  Until today when one of my co workers handed him a piece of paper and a pen and a few minutes later he said "Mom, look at my T-Rex!"  Here is what he shoved into my hands...
I wish I had a little pointer thing to better show you all the parts.  It took me a minute to make it out.  You can see the head and the body (with stripes)  There are the two feet (3 claws) and the two little arms out front (2 claws)  He didn't know how to draw the teeth so those are mine.  And if I would have known what was coming next I would have had him write T-Rex himself.  Next he drew me a Triceratops....

This one takes a little more imagination.  You are looking at the face of a Triceratops.  There are the 2 horns on top, one smaller horn just above his smiley face and just below his eyeballs. There are 4 legs below and possibly a tail off to the side.  But this is the part that really shocked me...  He then asked me how to spell Triceratops.  He said he wanted to write it all by himself.  So I started to tell him the letters and I was shocked as he wrote them out.  Like I said before, a few weeks ago he was struggling with just the letters in his name.  So I asked him, "Where did you learn this? Was it at school, or at Wawa's?" and he said "No, just me, I just know it."  When I dropped him off at Preschool I asked his teachers if they have been working on writing more and they were just as surprised as I was.  They have been working on letter recognition and writing their names, but they hadn't taught him this.  His Wawa said she hadn't seen him do it either.  So I guess he's just been paying attention, and I guess I need to be paying more attention!

It's just so exciting to watch my kids reach these new levels of intelligence.  They are growing so fast and learning so much.  It's amazing how much they are learning every single day.  It's almost true that you can't even blink without missing something important.

That boy always amazes me! I can totally relate to the surprise of when they do something that seems so small, yet so big. Edie has blown me away with her drawing and coloring skills. She is way ahead of where Ella was at this age. That's amazing, too, about him being able to write out a word like "triceratops".
Zach, you rule the school!

Well of course a little dinosaur would be able to draw a mighty fine dinosaur picture and write it's name. Zach you are amazing and a truely special boy. I can't wait to see you draw me a dinosaur picture. Can you write Grandma? I'll see you Saturday.

Suzan,
How great are those pictures! It is so amazing how perceptive Zach is. I really have to meet both of them.
So, every night for years I've read to Hannah and lately she's been reading to me. The other night she told me she would just rather read to herself, I was floored- like the end of an era or something. I sat on her bed just watching her read, being so sad at the change...but I guess that's part of parenthood. Funny how hard watching them reach milestones can be.

Wow I'm very impressed! I have a 3 1/2 yr old who loves to color as well, but hasn't gotten close to that clear of a picture. I give it an A++

Susan, I have told you for a LONG time how smart he really is...and I ought to know after all the countless 4 yr. olds I have taught in my lifetime! And with his memory, there will nothing he won't be able to accomplish! Zach, I think you are awesome and I am so proud of you. Are you and Cam ready for Horton Hears a Who? Can't wait! love you much, Wawa
