Last Sunday, Greg and I just up and decided to drive the Mirror Lake Highway all the way to Evanston. We though it would take just long enough for Cam to nap. Well, we were wrong. As we headed into the Uintahs we realized that it was a lot farther than we remembered and I started to realize how long it has been since I have been up there. I started having a flood of great memories rush back to me. I have spent a lot of time in those hills as a child and as a young adult...
We had our Allen family reunions up there every summer while we were growing up. It has been many years since. But I still remember those trips and the people who were there every year. I will never drive past Soapstone Basin without thinking of those days.
Quite often, when I was a kid, my parents used to pack the 5 of us in the jeep and we would just head out on a dirt road somewhere and camp. Sometimes to a lake, sometimes to an old village, sometimes to the top of a mountain. Maybe my Dad knew where we were going, but I'm not betting on it. Those were great memories. We had a lot of fun as kids. I hope my kids will be able to say the same thing when they get older.
I have a ton of memories in those mountains of a few great friends who have past away... Chris, Doug... I miss you guys!!!
Before Greg and I had kids, we also spent a lot of time up there. We hiked to Wall Resevoir one time with some friends and camped a few nights. That was even before we had our own dogs. We borrowed Cina and Kasper that trip. I can't wait to go back there. What a beautiful place!!!
...So anyways, it turned out to be a lot longer drive than we expected. We were trying to convince Zach that it was going to be really cool when we get to Evanston.
Zach: "What is in Evanston?"
Me: "ummm, Cowboys, Horses..."
Zach: "Are there pigs?"
Me: "I'm sure there are."
... long break...
Zach: "When are we going to get to the farm?"
I don't even know why we kept driving, the last stretch is not very exciting, but we had gone this far, and we needed gas, so we had to finish. Luckily, to our suprize, there are DINOSAURS in Evanston!!! Zach was THRILLED!!! He wanted to ride it, but it was way too hot from baking in the sun. So we took a picture of him with it instead.
On the way back we stopped by Bear River Station and the boys did a little fishing, while I ran around trying to get some good photos. Sometimes I think I spend so much time trying to get a good picture that I am missing out on what is really going on. But at least I did get some darling pictures that day!
Greg and I realized on this little road trip that we are getting caught up in what we are so desperately trying to avoid. Life is passing us by, and all we are doing is working. We almost forgot that one of the main reasons we moved to Rockport was to be closer to these mountains, so we could camp and enjoy the natural beauty a lot more. We will be taking some weekends off and will make sure that our boys have some wonderful memories of their own.

Wow! What a tribute to us as your parents that you can talk of great memories from your childhood. I too have let many fabulous moments pass me by. I have also allowed the pain of recent years to over ride the great memories and times I was able to have with all of you growing up. Thanks for opening my eyes to the good memories. I know your boys will have many happy memories, you are great parents. Zach comes up with some of the silliest and funniest things. You brought happy tears to my eyes with this one. Thank you sweetie, I love you.
What a lovely trip down memory lane with this one, Suz! I have to say, it brought happy tears to my eyes too. It got me thinking of the beautiful childhood you had with two beautiful parents. You were so lucky. You and Greg are going to provide a wonderful experience for your children too, you both have such a sense of adventure and such big, big love.
